Located almost 100km from the capital, the city of Thiadiaye has a population of approximately 13,000 inhabitants, many of whom live in villages without access to resources such as basic sanitation, electricity or schools.
This city is surrounded by villages that together have approximately 400 school-age children. The vast majority of them cannot read or write, in addition to showing signs of malnutrition.
Considering all these needs, we started building a kindergarten, which will also have a nutrition project integrated into the formal education program.
We chose the name “Kër Dorcas”, which means “house of Dorcas” in Wolof, one of the main national languages. According to the book of Acts chapter 9 verses 36 to 38, Dorcas was a woman known in the region where she lived for the assistance she provided to those in need. She lived such a meaningful life that, after her death, she was resurrected by the Apostle Peter, at the request of the orphans and widows she so lovingly cared for.
In September/2017 we took the first step towards carrying out the project, which was the acquisition of the land; in november/2017 we started the fundraising phase.
In August/2018 we started the construction phase, and until now we continue to continue the project as we obtain the financial resources for each stage. The forecast for the start of classes is October/2021.
